This week, several CAPTUS partners had the opportunity to visit the Steelanol plant at ArcelorMittal in Ghent, where Demo Site 1 is taking shape.

At this site, CAPTUS will demonstrate a full Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) process using an innovative multi-stage fermentation technology.

The ArcelorMittal’s pioneering Steelanol plant already captures and converts CO-rich gases into ethanol. Currently, valuable side streams (PSA tail gas and fermenter off-gases) are still used for energy production.

But CAPTUS aims to unlock their full potential by introducing a novel two-stage gas-liquid fermentation cascade.
– Converting steel mill gases into acetate
– Transforming acetate into medium- and long-chain TAGs (valuable bio-based oils)

This integrated process will be demonstrated at pilot scale under real industrial conditions, directly linked to the primary gas fermentation system.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with consortium partners, exchange insights, and see the progress on-site.
